Do you want me deciding your fate?

jury duty

My time has come and, unlike my last jury duty summons, I actually have to go tomorrow. Although I live less than a mile away from a courthouse, I’ve been assigned to report to Haverhill District Court which is nearly 40 miles away. Is that really necessary? Is this to say that Massachusetts and Essex County care little about cutting back on our country’s gas consumption and our reliance on foreign oil? Do the Saudis have a say in where I complete my jury duty?

My boyfriend offered to print me a tee shirt that would read, “Stitches for Snitches” in hopes of getting me dismissed from duty. Is he a sweetheart or what? Actually, we joked that it’s going to be difficult for any lawyer to put me on a jury when considering my boyfriend’s… to put it nicely… checkered past. “I knew my criminal record would come in handy at some point,” he joked.

On the bright side, I will be able to catch up on my reading, and the last time I had jury duty I did really enjoy the “Why Jury Duty is So Freaking Important” video they show you while you wait.

  1. Adam says:

I think the theory is if they send you 40 miles away your less likely to know the defendant.

  2. Goob says:

I’ve still never been summoned for Jury Duty. I’m not sure if I’m happy about this or angry that I’ve never been able to dish out some justice.

  3. Angela says:

Adam, you’re so smart. :) It wasn’t so terrible, at least Haverhill court has parking.

You should have heard how corny the judge was today, telling us that if we get selected, we’ve become part of the Judicial Branch of government!
