I love finding mistakes in the Boston Globe, and by mistakes, I don’t mean blaring inaccuracies or something like that. I’m talking about the little typos or the misplaced hyphen… little stuff that only a paginator would notice.
It’s not that I’m laughing at their errors, but it makes me feel better about the small mistakes I have made that some people just can’t seem to let me forget. Considering the amount of pages there are and the small number of staff (me) I think I do a pretty bang-up job.
So when people call up the office to tell me how stupid I am for putting that hypen there, it makes me feel better when I see the same exact uh-oh in one of the largest newspapers in the country. I wonder how many people call up the Globe’s office to tell them they made a small, insignificant mistake?
I think the moral of the story here is people suck. That, and until someone develops software to paginate an entire newspaper, there will be mistakes.
