Defending the Geek: Tony Kornheiser = not so bad

tony kornheiser, not so bad

I hate change in any form, especially when it comes to football. I hate when players retire, coaches move on, and uniform designs are altered. But one area that is most important is that of game announcers. If I had it my way, John Madden would still be doing games on Sunday afternoons with Pat Summerall. Their voices were the perfect balance of calm vs. nasal. And you know how an old song can bring you back to the time when you first heard it? The same can be said for their voices, it would bring me back to being a little kid on a Sunday afternoon as my dad watched football and I sat on the sofa playing with my Barbies. Anyway…

Change is inevitable and an old crank like me has no choice but to adjust. So when Monday night football was moved from ABC to ESPN, I had to grin and bear it. I mean, who the hell am I to say anyway… I don’t even watch the commercials that pay for the broadcast half of the time. Of course it took some time to get used to the two new guys accompanying Joe Theismann in the broadcast booth but I adjusted. Mike Tirico and Tony Kornheiser weren’t strangers, they were just filling in a new role at ESPN and congrats to them on their huge promotions.

After a few weeks, I did get used to it and I actually started to like Tony Kornheiser. He’s scrawny and dweeby but, HELL, he speaks like the every man! Sure, he’s much more casual than a usual announcer but that’s what makes him good. He’s goofy and his silly banter is similar to the conversations my dad and I have during games.

I like Kornheiser so much, I was surprised to find out that I was in a very teeny tiny minority. “Does he even know football,” one comment questioned. “He makes me want to punch babies,” screamed another. The guys on WEEI mention their dislike of his announcing style at least once a week. I just don’t get it.

And yes, I DID like Dennis Miller on MNF, and if you even think of saying that I only feel this way because I am a girl, I will punch you (after I find you, of course).

So cut the guy some slack, he’s just trying to enjoy his job which is a lot more than I can say for myself. And if you really hate him, you can always mute your TV and slap on ESPN radio and listen to Boomer, or whoever else is announcing. Maybe you could switch on your TV’s SAP function and learn how to hable Español while you watch football.

It really is strange… I’m annoyed easily (for sure) yet a guy that I find endearing easily annoys thousands, maybe even millions.

Baseball?! On a Sunday?!

Bills fan for a night

  1. I luv tony, he’s one of the best parts of MNF. Im just glad they got rid or Joe T. and not him.

  2. THANK YOU! So, I’m not the only one. 😀

  3. Count me in as another fan of Tony. I love him on PTI, and I love that he is exactly himself on MNF too (at least I think so, he’s the same as he is on PTI anyway) & not some fake know-it-all. He entertains me, which is more than I can say for a lot of other football announcers.

  4. I look at it like this – I already understand football. I enjoy football and when I watch it on tv, I want to be entertained. Kornheiser keeps me entertained.

  5. It seems we get a lot of Tony down here in DC and I don’t hate him.

  6. Yeah, doesn’t he (did he?) write for the Washington Post?

  7. Meow

I agree 100% with your hating-change sentiment. If it was me, I’d have the teams, the coaches (of everything) stay the same until everyone was old and gray. Of course, that’s not how one wins championships, but still.

I, too, like the Korn. But I HATED Dennis Miller! Prolly because his brand of smarmy is not my type of comedy. But like you said, I already understand football, I don’t need it spelled out for me, give me a few hoots and hollers and funny quips and I’m happy.

  8. Angela,
I liked Miller, and I like Tony. The switch from ABC to ESPN wasn’t that difficult for me because the two had been melded together for the last few seasons. In fact, I like the MNF crew every bit as much as the SNF crew. Good post!
