A nine-year-old’s perspective on the presidential election

Posted on July 07, 2008 by Angela

As we drove to Wakefield for fireworks the other night, my boyfriend, his son, and I started discussing the history of the Fourth, such as the Declaration of Independence, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. Out of the blue, the kid asks who we want to win the upcoming presidential election.

“John McCain, I guess,” I said.

He replied, “Good! Because I don’t want Obama to win!” Bear in mind, he’s only nine-years-old.

Intrigued, we asked him why.

“Obama wants to make kids stay in school two more hours a day!”

I have no idea where the kid heard that. His mother is far from, we’ll say, political. But that, my friends, is a nine-year-old perspective on the upcoming election. Don’t think they aren’t paying attention, in between episodes of Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents, of course.

  1. You should have asked him how he feels about our current president.

Kids pay more attention to current events more than we give them credit for, I tihink. My daughter wouldn’t have voted for Deval Patrick for the same basic reason!

When I was his age, the most I knew of the presidential election was my 4th grade teacher she was voting for Bush because she thought Dan Quayle was handsome. *shrugs*

  4. Nick says:

I kinda remember “learning” about politics during election years, but all I really remember are the posters and banners. It is amazing how much young children can pick-up on and what they comprehend without us “adults” realizing it.

  5. Bush Mackel says:

Whenever I see McCain anywhere, I swear he just looks frail. Ha ha

Nick, if you knew my boyfriend’s kid, you’d be even more shocked. In his house, the most watched television show is Jerry Springer.

McCain might look frail, but at least he won’t be so cruel as to make kids stay in school longer. ha ha

  7. Bush Mackel says:

@Angela – Ha ha, ok good point. I remember when I was younger, June 15th (last day of school) was always the happiest of my life. And honestly, I’m not a big fan of the school system anyway so maybe I should change my vote. Honestly – Coming out of MD, it probably wouldn’t matter much anyway. *nod*

  8. Hey, I’m from Wakefield in the Uk, wonder if there similar at all!
