Take your Sports Hub and cram it up your butts

This morning as I turned on my car, I heard something I never in a million years thought I would hear blaring from my radio. That would be the sound of P!nk on 104.1. It’s official. WBCN is now dead (except for HD radio apparently but who the hell as HD radio?) And for folks like me who own pitiful excuses for MP3 players, and who are too poor/cheap to pay for satellite radio, the whole thing really friggin sucks because, once again, another option has been pulled.

AND NO, despite my love of sports, I probably won’t listen to the new Sports Hub talk radio station. Have you seen the joke of a line-up? This switch has been years in the making and this is the best they could come up with?

Whoever thought it would be desirable to pair Douchy McDoucherson (Michael Felger) with Jerkoff McFuckface (Tony Massarotti) in the afternoon deserves a boot in the ass. What are they going to title the show, “We Hate All Boston Sports and Their Fans Suck… Show”? (Yeah, Tony… I have not, and will not, forget your little rant about Boston fans after your colleague and your newspaper ran an unsubstantiated rumor as fact the day before the Super Bowl and you were somehow shocked and appalled that we were pissed).

And I’m supposed to turn away from my beloved Dale and Holley midday for Scott Zolak and Gary Tanqueray Tanguay!? Are ya kidding me?!

The only chance Sports Hub had of winning me over was the Morning Drive because, let’s face it, Dennis and Callahan are pompous windbags with sticks crammed up their butts, but once again, major FAIL… Toucher and Rich’s move from ‘BCN provides nothing new and for fuck’s sake, Toucher is a self-proclaimed Jets fan! I’m supposed to listen to a Goddamn Jets fan on a Boston sports talk station!? You’re telling me that on two Monday mornings this season, the day after the Patriots hand the Jets major asswhippings, of course, I’m going to throw on good ol’ Sports Hub and Fred Toucher is going to happily discuss the previous days glorious events? No fucking way.

What the folks at CBS Radio should have done was throw a boatload of cash at Fitzy and given him a show at some point in the day. That, I would listen to. Maybe they could convince Dennis Eckersley to take a time slot once Jerry Remy returns to the booth. The Barstoolsports guys would be pretty awesome, too. Something, anything than what they have now.

Sports Hub. Blah!

ADDENDUM: OH! And at night they’re going to broadcast a show by the guy who did Miami Dolphins post-games?! AND THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE PATRIOTS’ OFFICIAL NETWORK!? Oh my God, I just threw up a little in my mouth. Go to hell, CBS Radio.

With all the vitriol towards sports talkahs,
    what’s your opinion of me?

  2. Ouch! I agree with almost everything you say but I actually have grown to like Felger. I hated him as the Bruins beat reporter but I don’t mind him talking about football. Plus I think he calls bullshit on a lot of the old time writers around Boston which is healthy.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who despises Massarotten. Having the Bruins on a strong FM signal with a chance of some real hockey talk rather than the “the Broons don’t spend no money” idiots on EEI is the best part about this station.

This single statement reveals that you have no appreciation for what would work on the radio. Fitzy is a one trick pony who has been schlepping his tired act through the years and gone nowhere. If he doesn’t have it all written out with lame setups, then he schtick does not work.

The barstool sports guys steal items from deadspin.com and other, funnier sights while being constantly scammed by the simplest hoaxes. They don’t know shit and there hasn’t been a single interesting word written in their rag.

  4. I know it’s blasphemy to say this, but I’ve learned to really like Toucher and Rich, and I’m glad they made the move. It’s probably the only show I’ll listen to on the new station, but it’s still pretty good. Come on, there’s nothing better than listening to the rants of a crazed Jets fan.

I’ll switch back and forth from EEI, as D&C in the morning is absolutely unlistenable, but after Toucher and Rich, I’ll be back to EEI.

  5. For the record, I don’t have a problem with Toucher and Rich. Boyfriend is a big fan. I just don’t like them on Sports Talk. Once, we were listening and Toucher went into Jets fan mode and was saying typical things you would expect a Jets fan to say about the Patriots. I’m not asking him to change his allegiances because that’s just wrong, but I don’t see how he can talk about the Patriots without a piece of his soul dying. And even if he did say nothing but nice things, catering to the Patriots fanbase, I’d know it was all fake and phony and that might even be worse than him spewing about the Jets.

But not that Dennis and Callahan are ANY better. And yeah, Fitzy and Barstoolsports were the only things that popped into my brain. I was just mad about Massarotti, they’re all I could think of at the time.

Felger’s not the worst but that’s only when he has someone else to keep him level.

<iOnce, we were listening and Toucher went into Jets fan mode and was saying typical things you would expect a Jets fan to say about the Patriots.

You should listen more closely. When Fred goes into Jets fan mode, he is being ironic, mocking the reactions and comments of the mouthbreathing fan.

My question is when in the world did Nick Stevens become ‘Fitzy’? His name isn’t Fitzgerald, so this moniker makes no sense. Why doesn’t he use his real name like he did on ESPN’s Dream Job?

As for your feelings on Massarotti, do you not give people a second chance? I will fully agree that the column he wrote ripping the Boston sports fans is far from his best, but generally he is a knowledgeable guy on sports and has already formed a pretty good on-air chemistry with Felger in their first show this afternoon.

  8. A studied guy

Wow. A Masshole meets the modern world.

There are sports teams and commentators who do not blindly follow the concept that all Boston is good and holy for as long as they play in the sacred grounds. There are shareholders who realize that the concept of kissing ass may not draw the highest ratings.

So sorry, dear, but the world doesn’t revolve around the Hub, and the Hub doesn’t revolve around you.

  9. How dare I want a Boston (emphasis on “Boston”) sports talk station to be partial to Boston (emphasis on “Boston”) teams?! *gasps and shocked moans abound* If I want impartial, I will stream a national station.

And no, dear, I never suggested the world revolves around the “Hub” and the “Hub” revolve around me. Hmm, in fact I don’t think I’d even want the world to revolve around the hub as it revolved around me. That’s a lot of revolving and I don’t care to be the center of things.

have you ever noticed how boring WEEI becomes when they have three days of David Ortiz “roids” talk, or its celebrity callers and shutins talking about the same tired Boston topics?

Get people who know something and have them interview people who know stuff. Talk about somethings beyond 128 for a change. Fitzy and Barstool sprots don’t know nothing more than what they stumbled across on boston.com or deadspin.

  11. I totally agree about the ‘eei callers. That’s what of the worst parts of ‘eei. I don’t really like any of the callers. I really only like Dale and Holley during the day and Planet Mikey at night.

  12. Chris

This time the competition for WEEI will be more severe, simply because of the reach & clarity of the FM signal. Here in southern New Hampshire, that matters. But content is king, and an irritating host on a clear channel won’t woo listeners. We don’t want a show hosted by contrarians, either. You earn no stripes for proudly going against the grain in hopes that you can gush later how ‘right’ you ended up being.

I have never heard of this site before today’s link on Boston Sports Media but I couldn’t agree more. You absolutely nailed why I won’t be listening to the new sports channel in town, even though I would love to see someone knock eei off their high hoarse.

  14. Here’s a link to a portable HD radio for $49 that you can use standalone, or connect to your car/home stereo via audio out just like an mp3 player

Both of the new BCN broadcasts are pretty good, and there’s lots of other cool stuff available.

Check BCN’s listings of available stuff:

    Dale SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Mark

“My beloved Dale & Holley” Are you kidding? Granted, The Sports Hub has a weak line-up I agree. Dale Arnold is nothing without the sats and information in front of him. Dale is critical of just about anyone who has a contrary . my opinion, his 15 min. are up. His voice is akin to what you’d hear on Queer Eye for the Streight Guy. Believe me, Dale’s not the peach you would think, he’s WEEI’s sacred cow and pet of Jason Wolfe. Dale can’t stand critisism, and is as much a diva as Lindsey Lohan.
