While I’m in the midst of NaBloPoMo, I really need to remember to write to this thing in the morning because by the time I get home at night, I am wiped the fuck out. For real. Seriously, this is the best I can come up with. I apologize.

My day, my day, my day… On the plus side, today I successfully pulled off my first solo meeting and everyone was pleased with what I ordered for catering. That might not mean a lot to some people, but heck, I’m new to this administrative assisting thing. It’s quite different from newspaper publishing, ya know?

One of the new admins at work told me that we she learned she’d be following an admin named Angela her first week, she imagined Angela from the office. Yeah, that one. How friggin awesome is that?!

Working for scientists is cool 0

The best part about turning the clocks back an hour is on mornings when you have to get up early, it doesn’t feel early at all! Waking up at 4 a.m. felt no different than my usual 5 a.m.

Today is a big day at work and is also the reason why I am up early. It’s the start of our annual “Retreat” which is nothing like a usual corporate retreat and everything like a high-tech science fair. It’s essentially an in-house conference where all of our researchers gather to discuss their projects, hang up posters (scientists love posters) and attend talks given by colleagues. And for my science-illiterate brain, I will probably understand none of it. But that’s OK because my job today isn’t about enrichment or whatever… I’m part of the team to ensure that everyone properly checks in and has a seat in the hall. Oh, what fun!

So, in about thirty minutes, I will head to work where I will meet a bunch of the volunteers and together we will take the good ol’ CT2 bus to H.M.S. and get ready for the onslaught of scientists coming for the day. I’m so excited! I just hope everything goes smoothly.

Glad ya lost, brats 2

I don’t really care about high school athletics with the exception of the schools I must cover for work. When playoff time comes, if the local teams win, I have more work to do (photos, stories, congratulatory ads). If they lose, then my work is done until the next sport season kicks off.

Tonight, the Everett High boys basketball team hosted the Brighton boys down the street from my office. Because we are in production tonight and the paper is, for the most part, done, we were getting calls from folks at the game updating us on the score. Our photographer was sending us action photos and more information because we are cool like that and just in time, the game ended with Everett victorious, I was able to enter the score into the paper and I met my deadline. Ah

After 12 hours of hellish non-stop work, I think I deserve a cigarette (spare me, anti-smoker-people). I went out for a cigarette, and low and behold, I saw the bus full of Brighton kids stopped at the streetlight in front of my office. They were tough to miss, the whole bus was in an uproar. The players were hanging out the window, screaming at everyone waiting at the nearby bus stop. And I mean screaming. Eff this, Eff you, Eff them, Effing Eff Eff, if you get my drift. I’m not so prudish as to have been offended by their rampant profanity directed at innocent bystanders. I chalked it up to them being teenagers and having just lost a playoff game.

BUT THEN, the light changed and the bus slowly began to roll past me. And as if it was in slow motion, the back of the bus erupted, turning their rage toward me. “You %*#$&%$ B! (I’m censoring this for my under-18 readers.)” “Effing Eff, you Effing see you next Thursday.”

Oh no they didn’t!

Listen, brats. You got your butts handed to you tonight. The least you could do is go home with a little dignity and not harass every person you see walking (or smoking a cigarette after a hellish 12-hours of non-stop work) on the street.

I’d hope the Everett kids would have had a little more class if the role was reversed.

Go Green! 2

Celtics I have to admit, I’m pretty excited about tonight’s Celtics-Lakers game. It looks like St. Patrick’s Day today – everywhere you look, everyone is wearing green (myself included). Maybe we could call it “St. Auerbach Day?” Hell, it’s gotta beat the purple and yellow Lakers fans are wearing… right?

I just think it’s about time the Celtics, Boston’s perennial champion of the 20th century, enter the new millennium and reclaim their place in town, you know, with the Red Sox and my Patriots showing them up lately.

At least today wasn’t unbearable at work. Shocking, I know. Actually it was kind of fun because this afternoon, a local cub scout came in to learn about newspapers for some boy scout badge, and I gotta tell ya, he was the cutest kid EVER! He couldn’t have been any older than seven but he actually showed interest in what I was saying. I’ve had boy scouts come in before for badges but this kid was the most fun. All told, he earned his badge and my dad didn’t suck as badly as usual. I’m even thinking of sneaking a little “hello” to him in tomorrow’s paper.
